The Hall of the King of Immateriality The King of Immateriality is the Buddha of the Cloud Peak Temple and Mianshan Mountain, and the oldest Buddha of the Han people. His popular name is Tian Zhichao. He made great contributions to the Chan and Linji sects of Buddhism. After he died in a sitting posture, he became the King of Immateriality. In the center of the main hall of the Cloud Peak Temple is the statue mound of the clay-covered body of Tian Zhichao. To express his gratitude to Tian Zhichao who summered a heavy rain to remove the drought for Chang¡¯an, Emperor Taizong of the Tang Dynasty issued an edict that the Hall of the King Of Immateriality be built. The hall retains the Tang architectural style, such as the stone base and arched door carved with beautiful patterns.
