The Zhenguan Imperial Banquet originated from the Zhenguan reign of the Tang Dynasty. According to the historical records, in the 14th year of the Zhenguan reign, Chang’an was attacked by a drought and all the crops in the fields withered. Emperor Taizong issued an edict that a platform be set up to pray for rains from Mianshan Mountain. Right after the sacrificial ceremony, it rained heavily, and the crops got enough water. In the 15th year of the Zhenguan reign, Emperor Taizong led all the high-ranking officials to Mianshan Mountain to express gratitude to heaven for the rain. The magistrate of Jiexiu County threw the “Zhenguan Imperial Banquet” to entertain Emperor Taizong. The “Zhenguan Imperial Banquet” reflected the abundant materials and high cooking techniques in the early Tang Dynasty. It is an exotic flower in China’s culinary culture garden.
