Mianshan Mountain in Shanxi is the birthplace of the Pure Land Sect of Buddhism in the world. Tan Luan, an eminent monk of the Northern Wei Dynasty, played an important role in the development of the Pure Land Sect culture of Buddhism. Tan Luan started to study Buddhism in his childhood. When learning that the Baofu (Belly Embraching) Temple in Mianshan Mountain was a famous Buddhist temple for all the eminent monks in the world, he took a long way to the Baofu Temple and became a monk. To spread Buddhist doctrines, he devoted himself to annotate the Buddhist sutras. On the basis of the Buddhist doctrines taught by Bodhiruchi, a famous monk from India, Tan Luan studied some books by Bodhisattva Nagarjuna. Finally he became the founder of the Pure Land Sect.
